Chessboxing was first imagined by Enki Bilal in his graphic novel Cold Equator published in 1992 in the Nikopol trilogy.
In 2003, Iepe Rubingh, a Dutch artist, brought today's Chessboxing to life and founded the World Chess Boxing Organisation.
He organised the first chessboxing demonstration as an artistic performance, then the first official international bout, which he won himself in Amsterdam.
In chessboxing, competitors face off in a series of three-minute rounds, alternating between chess and English boxing. They get a one-minute break between rounds to rest and refocus.
In case of a draw, the judges confer to declare the winner.
